Heritage • Genealogy • History • Preservation
In addition to the preservation of local history and a museum for display of memorabilia and artifacts, one of the many goals of the society is the collection and archiving of biographies of former residents and their families, along with photos and genealogy for future generations seeking this information. Anyone having this type of information that you would like to have preserved by the society is asked to contact us. Likewise, if you are seeking biographical information about any former resident of the community we would like to share any information we may have with you. As we grow we hope to have a substantial library of this type of information available.
Local History • German Heritage • Preservation
Steamboat Rock has a rich historical background. The famous author Herbert Quick was born here and wrote two of his best known books, The Hawkeye and Vandermarks Folly that depict the true stories of our earliest history in the form of fiction. Dark days of our history have been told in the video of the Rainsbarger lynching.

We want your stories
to share...
Email us your stories about Steamboat and we will add them to the website!
When European settlers came to this area, the Germans were predominant in settling in and around Steamboat Rock. We will continue to preserve the memory of all that this culture contributed to our wonderful past.
Every other year we sponsor a ghost town bus tour and produce a video. We have a goal to preserve the memory of nearby lost towns that started just like ours when Iowa was new. On alternate years we present a cemetery theater by candlelight that depicts men and women from our local history that we do not want to be forgotten. We have prepared a 400 page book of the rich history of Steamboat Rock that is available by mail or at our museum.
